Poverty and equity, indigenous and local communities

This section sets out the obligations on Parties relating to links between sustainable use and alleviating poverty, equity (although, as pointed out in the introduction, the Module does not include issues relating to access and benefit sharing for genetic resources), and indigenous and local communities. The need to ensure that sustainable use plays a role in alleviating poverty has been increasingly recognised in recent years and this activity includes obligations from CBD, CITES and Ramsar. The importance of taking account of the interests of indigenous and local communities in sustainable use has been a central concern, and it is also reflected in obligations agreed by Ramsar and the World Heritage Convention.
