The Voluntary Guidelines on Biodiversity-Inclusive Environmental Impact Assessment (contained in the Annex) suggest that at the screening stage it is important to assess the impact of the intended activity on the sustainable use of biodiversity (Annex, 8(b) & Table 1).

Appendix I of the Guidelines for incorporating biodiversity-related issues into environmental impact assessment legislation and/or process and in strategic environmental assessment notes that two question pertinent for screening biological diversity impacts are: Does the intended activity affect the sustainable use of population of a species? And, does the intended activity affect the sustainable exploitation of (an) ecosystem(s) or land-use type(s) by humans in such a manner that the exploitation becomes destructive or non-sustainable?
