The overall purpose of the programme of work is to be achieved through the implementation of the three main objectives of the Convention.

CBD Decision VIII/1, Annex, E.
Part E sets out the goals, targets and timeframes for the programme of work. Goal 2 is the Sustainable use of island biodiversity and under this goal there are four targets: unsustainable consumption of island biological resources and its impact on biodiversity is reduced; island biodiversity-based products are derived from sources that are sustainably managed, and production areas managed, consistent with the conservation of biological diversity; no species of wild flora and fauna is endangered by international trade; and rate of loss and degradation of natural habitats in islands significantly decreased
